R is for Reflect

As we find ourselves at the halfway point of the year, it’s time to kick back, take a breather, and reflect on all we’ve done so far. Now that the exam period is over, we can indulge in some quality me-time and contemplate what we’ve accomplished and what we could do differently moving forward.

What is reflection?

Reflection is seriously thinking about an experience and analysing how it has impacted you and what you plan to do with that knowledge. So, now that it is soon to be July, it is time to look back over what has happened in the first half of 2023.

Do you ever wish you could go back and do things differently?

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, and a great saying that we love is, ‘You live your life forward, but you learn it backwards!’

Reflecting is a bit like learning from your mistakes, but it’s not just about your mistakes. It’s also about appreciating your successes too. So, ask yourself, what went well, what worked, what didn’t and what you would do differently. Also, think about what you have learnt from your experiences. One tool that we have found very useful when reflecting is journaling your thoughts.

So, if you’ve finished your exams now, take a look back and reflect. Write down what worked and what maybe you won’t do again!

What can I reflect on?

Let’s start by giving yourself a pat on the back. Seriously, you deserve it! Remember those late nights burning the midnight oil, cramming for exams or a work deadline, and feeling like your brain might explode? Well, you made it through! No matter the results you get, you should take a moment to appreciate the effort you put in and the knowledge you’ve gained along the way. No matter how tiny, each step you took brought you closer to your goals.

It’s not just about dwelling on what’s already happened. This halfway mark gives us a chance to shake things up a bit. It’s time to assess your journey and think about what you can do differently to make the second half of the year even better. Did you struggle with time management? Did you forget to squeeze in a little self-care amidst the chaos? Identify those areas where we can make positive changes and learn from your experience.

Now, let’s not forget the valuable lessons you’ve learned. Life is all about learning, after all! You’ve gained insights into your study habits, strengths, and weaknesses. So, armed with this newfound knowledge, it’s time to level up your game. Ditch those ineffective study techniques and embrace new strategies that actually work for you. Set realistic goals and create a game plan to tackle them head-on. You’ve got this!

The end of the exam period is a friendly reminder that life isn’t just about textbooks and grades. It’s about finding balance and enjoying the journey. So, while we’re reflecting on the first half of the year, let’s also think about the other aspects of our lives that deserve attention. Have we been neglecting our passions or hobbies? Have we forgotten to take care of ourselves amidst all the stress? It’s time to remember that life is meant to be lived, and you need to look after your well-being and have an excellent work-life balance.

Another aspect to reflect on is your gratitude. Looking back over the year, what are you grateful for? Did you get support during your exams? Has your health been good? Do you enjoy your job? Are you grateful for your friends and family? Have you been given the opportunity to do something? Are you going on holiday over the summer? Ensure you thank those who helped you and truly appreciate what good has happened to you over the past six months. Reflecting on this can help to propel you into the second half of the year with a positive mindset.

As we navigate the second half of the year, make sure to have some fun along the way – the summer holidays are approaching, after all! Celebrate your accomplishments, big or small, and use the lessons you’ve learned to grow and thrive. Don’t forget to carve out some time for relaxation and self-care. You owe it to yourself to enjoy the ride.

Reaching the halfway mark is your cue to reflect and recalibrate. It’s a chance to high-five yourself for making it this far and to ponder how you can make the rest of the year even better. So, dive into the next half of the year with a relaxed mindset, enthusiasm, and the knowledge that you’re on the path to becoming the best version of yourself.

Looking Back to Look Forward

A phrase that we’ve used for years is, “You live your life forwards, but you learn it backwards.” Many of us are
