Mental Wellness and Mindset: Marching Forward

March is a month of movement. The days grow lighter, spring edges closer, and it feels like we can do more with our time again. With longer days and a sense of renewed energy in the air, it often brings feelings of fresh starts and new momentum.

March also brings the Spring Equinox, when day and night are almost perfectly balanced. It’s a natural moment of reset – a time when many of us begin to reflect on balance in our own lives.

March is also when we recognise World Teen Mental Wellness Day, a powerful reminder that mental health matters just as much as physical health for people of all ages, but particularly for young people navigating school, friendships and the ever-growing digital world.

For teenagers especially, life can feel busy, pressured and sometimes overwhelming. That’s why this month here at Future Toolbox, we are focussing on mental wellness, mindset, and “marching forward” with care for ourselves and others.

Signs to Look Out For

Many young people experience periods of worry, sadness, low motivation or behavioural changes. Often, these feelings are driven by pressures from school, friendships, social expectations and online comparison.

For parents, family members, teachers and friends, there are often small signs that someone might be struggling. These can include:

  • Noticeable mood changes
  • Pulling away from friends, family or favourite activities
  • Changes in sleep patterns or appetite

If you spot something that feels “different”, try not to ignore it. A simple, gentle check-in can mean more than you realise. Sometimes knowing someone has noticed (and cares),  is enough to open the door.

A simple question like “How are you really doing at the moment?” can go a long way.

Simple Tools for Teenagers When Life Feels Overwhelming

When life feels busy or stressful, small actions can make a big difference. The good news is that there are some simple tools young people can use to help regain a sense of calm and control.

Silence Your Digital Feed:

Take a moment to think about your social media feed. How does it make you feel? Inspired? Connected? Motivated? Or does it leave you feeling slightly behind, not quite good enough, or worried about where you are compared to others? If the online world leaves you feeling drained or doubtful, it might be time for a digital spring clean.

You have every right to mute, unfollow or step back from accounts that make you question your worth. Your online world should inspire and uplift you – not intensify comparison or FOMO.

Try this: spend 10 minutes today reviewing who and what you follow. Remove anything that doesn’t align with how you want to feel – then notice the difference.

Small Wins Build Strong Minds:

Personal growth rarely comes from huge, dramatic changes. More often, it grows quietly through small daily habits that keep your mind clear and steady.

Creating a Small Wins Checklist can be a great place to start. These small actions help build positive routines that support your wellbeing.

Here’s a simple Small Wins Checklist you could try this month:

  • Digital Detox: Spend 30 minutes away from screens
  • Hydration: Drink a full glass of water first thing
  • Mindful Movement: 5 minutes of stretching or walking
  • Gratitude: Write down three things you are grateful for

They may seem small, but small actions build strong foundations.

Rest Is Part of the Work

Friendly reminder: rest is not a reward for work – it is part of the work!

We often feel guilty for slowing down. Somewhere along the way, we learned that being productive means being valuable. But your brain needs downtime to process, heal and grow.

Sustainable success is impossible without mental wellness. You don’t have to be productive every second to make every second count. Resting is equally as important as productivity.

A Moment of Balance

The official start of spring arrives on Friday 20th March, when day and night are almost perfectly balanced. It’s a symbol of renewal and fresh starts, and we often feel more joyful and uplifted at this time of year.

For teenagers, this can be the perfect moment to “spring” into action with education – but in a balanced way.

Ask yourself:

  • Am I studying productively?
  • Am I resting enough?
  • Am I making time for things that recharge me and make me feel good?

Use this natural reset point to reflect on your work-life balance. Burnout doesn’t arrive overnight – it builds when balance disappears.

Gently Marching Forward

Mental wellness isn’t about constant, consistent happiness. It’s about resilience, awareness and having the right support systems in place.

As we move further into spring, try to focus on creating balance. Check in with yourself, check in with others, clean up your digital space, build small wins and most importantly – rest without guilt.

Your wellbeing is worth protecting. March is a month of movement – but movement doesn’t have to mean rushing.

Sometimes the most powerful step forward is simply moving gently and intentionally.
